Car rental in Milan
Pointless in the city centre, useful for the lakes and the Oltrepò. Here's how to think about it.
Area C and traffic: what to know before driving in Milan
Central Milan has Area C, a paid congestion zone monitored by cameras, active on weekdays. If your goal is to see Piazza della Scala, skip the car: the centre is well served by metro, tram and bus. If your goal is exploring the Lombard lakes or the Oltrepò Pavese independently, renting makes sense — pick up the car at a car park outside Area C and don't attempt to drive it into the centre on weekdays.
When it makes sense
For Lake Como, Lake Maggiore, Lake Garda, and the Oltrepò Pavese — these destinations are best explored by car, with your own schedule and free scenic stops.
When it doesn't
For staying in Milan: the centre is well connected by metro and tram, and Area C makes driving inconvenient and costly. A car here is only a parking problem.
